Overview:
After the first year of the Covid-19 Pandemic, researchers found that Hispanic, Black, and Asian populations experienced worse rates of anxiety and depression than their non-Hispanic, white counterparts. The early years of the Covid-19 Pandemic had a disproportionate impact on non-White and Hispanic communities. In addition to the racialized impact of the pandemic, surveys from the Pew Research Center revealed that there had been a steep increase in experiences of discrimination among Black, Hispanic, and Asian people, with an unprecedent increase of anti-Asian violence. The murder of George Floyd by the police and the murder of six Asian women in Atlanta also contributed to experiences of racial trauma.Even before the events of 2020 and 2021, BIPOC identifying Americans with mental health needs received lower quality of care while many were unable to access any mental health services.
As the need for mental health services has increased and the stigma for accessing services has decreased, are mental health providers and care workers equipped to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse client population? This training will begin with a presentation to contextualize the issue and present best practices. This will be followed by a panel discussion of BIPOC transitional age youth who will share their experiences of mental health and accessing care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Participants will receive an overview on recent research on racial and ethnic disparities in occurrences of mental health and access to treatment.
- Participants will learn about structural and cultural factors influencing access to and quality of care.
- Participants will learn about best practices for working with BIPOC communities and increasing their own cultural humility.
- Participants will hear directly from BIPOC young people about their experiences with mental health and seeking mental health care.
